Healthy Homes and Bathrooms in Guadalupe
Project Launch:
There are 130 families in the community of 15 de Abril, situated in the hot desert of northern Peru. The larger municipality of Guadalupe considers 15 de Abril to be an area of extreme poverty and great need. Most families live in adobe houses with dirt floors and tin roofs, and the local health center has identified the lack of basic sanitation in homes to be the community's number one problem. There were 22 deaths related to parasitical infections and digestive illness in the last year. With World Connect's support, 20 families, primarily women-led, will build sanitary bathrooms in their homes, which will be connected to the community's main sewage line. The Sanitation department in the Municipality of Guadalupe is treating this project as a pilot initiative, the goal being to succeed in 15 de April and then implement the project in multiple neighboring communities.
