The Elementary School in Garabito de Aquas Zarcas in Costa Rica has seen the student body population increase significantly over the past ten years. The school is the town’s most organized and motivated community entity, with the principal, staff, school board, and parents all having shown interest in developing new project. A $2,620 grant through World Connect’s Kids to Kids program in 2008 funded the Children’s Dance Group in making traditional dresses and purchasing videos, music, and handout materials for cultural performances; currently the dance group serves as the school’s only extracurricular activity. Grant funds were also used to purchase a playground for the school. A commitment has been made by the principal, staff, school board and parent organization to make these project sustainable and this motivated group continues to fundraise to do so. Project leaders understand that their efforts not only benefit their own children but future generations of students who will pass through their beloved school.
