Students at Gitarama Primary School, located in the rural hills outside Kibuye in Rwanda’s Western Province, are courageous children who are eager to learn. The big challenge in the way of their education and success is the poverty that they live with every day. Many students suffer from malnutrition, are orphaned or live with HIV/AIDS. To help these children and their families, a grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program supported an educational program on agriculture gardening techniques to help augment crop yields. Grant funding supported student participation in an agriculture club with a focus on animal husbandry and composting. The “Some-bunny Loves Me” agriculture club’s main goal is to engage students about the wonder of gardening and composting through hands-on practical activities in order to grow more food of higher quality for improved nutrition and additional income. The program got its name from the fact that each member received a rabbit and a chicken to take care of. Once a week club members studied different techniques in gardening, composting and animal husbandry. After “graduating,” members now teach other new members of the club and so it continues until all students in the school have had a chance to participate. Students took their new knowledge and a couple of animals home and taught their families by practicing the techniques they learned, thus creating a sustainable project for this community.
