Reflection of our youth
Project Launch: 2-12-16
In Colonia Libertad, recreational opportunities for youth are limited as there are no after school clubs, sports teams, or recreational facilities. This project will support the local youth group, which consists of 12 active members, as they renovate the local park to construct benches, tables, a water fountain, and a stage. The park will become a safe space for young people to practice music and theater, study, relax and play sports. In preparation for the project, the youth group solicited support from their community and raised more than $100 from their own fundraising efforts.
Project Update: 6-14-17
Materials have been bought, trees have been cut, and construction will begin on May 2nd, 2016, with several community members volunteering their time to help. The youth have been spreading the word about the park’s revamp and have collected donations on a weekly basis. This has been a great bonding and leadership experience for the youth as they are constantly engaging with each other and sharing their visions for the park.
Final Report: 6-27-17
Members of the community now have an open and safe space to meet. There is now a stage to promote music and art and now the community can utilize the stage for band, dance, and theater practice. The community has already held meetings, a concert, and different performance on the stage since it has been completed. Developments in the park were also undertaken and the site now has a water source. Community members come together weekly to clean and work on making the park a more beautiful location for residents.
