The community of Motil is located in the northern part of Peru, in the department of La Libertad, 3-4 hours outside Trujillo, the 2nd largest city in Peru. The town varies between a traditional and modern culture and the mix of culture comes from being located in the mountains where being reserved is common among many people of the Andean Mountain towns, and the town's proximity to Trujillo, a modern city. Often the people of Motil work between Motil and Trujillo where there is an economic hub and where they sell items they produce, such as lumber and cheese. A $470 grant from World Connect's Kids to Kids Program in 2011 supported the project "Recycled Eyes", that taught the children of Motil about recycling. The program increased their knowledge base by explaining the process of recycling, what products are recycled, and what can come from recycled materials. In addition, the youth organization created locations for materials to be recycled via painted bins placed in the school designating where each type of recyclable material should be placed. The goal of the project with the community of Motil was to promote recycling and what can be done with recycled products. Business sessions were held for individuals that made items from recycled materials, encouraging them to sell their materials at various events happening in surrounding communities. Any excess recycled materials were given to the school to continue with their project to start a library through the selling of recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, glass and metal, to start a library and to repair books.Explore other Projects
