Dauin's Eco-Friendly Souvenir Shop
Project Launch:
Dauin is a popular tourist getaway that attracts thousands of vacationers every year. However, many tourist-facing businesses are owned by foreigners and local Filipinos have not been integrated into this important economic sector. Local economic activities, such as fishing, do not create as much revenue as tourism-oriented retail. This project proposes the creation of a tourist shop operated by the local women's fisherfolk organization that will reflect indigenous sensibilities and utilize recyclable materials in jewelry-making, greatly reducing litter on local beaches. This new source of income will facilitate the inclusion of local interests in the tourism industry in Dauin.
