Community Hydroponic Garden
Project Launch:
In the District of Vice, Peru, citizens must travel to a nearby town daily to purchase food - a practice that takes money from the community and the local economy. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health in Vice reports high rates of childhood malnutrition. In order to address these challenges, the Community Hydroponic Project will construct a community garden. Fifty community members, mostly women, will be tasked with managing the community garden while they are trained in urban agricultural practices and hydroponic gardening, which reduces water use. The pilot garden will produce nutritious fruits and vegetables for sale in local markets, ensuring that funding is in place to maintain the garden for years to come. Meanwhile, the 50 trainees will take their knowledge out into the community, improving local sustainable agricultural practices and increasing the availability of nutritious foods.
