Waste Management in Nioro du Rip
Project Launch: 5-25-18
The aim of this project is to create a privatized waste collection system for six neighborhoods in the Kaolack region of Senegal. Upon the start of daily activities of household trash collection, disposal, treatment and transformation, there will be direct and obvious benefits to the community. Not only does the creation of this business bring jobs to a community that lacks employment opportunity, it addresses environmental and health concerns as well. This project is strictly community led with the involvement of the six neighborhood leaders alongside a local Senegalese NGO, further emphasizing the viability of the project.
Project Update: 9-6-18
Thus far, the beginning steps of business creation have been accomplished. The project team performed a market study to determine feasibility and community need for a formalized waste collection service in October 2017. Since then, feasibility and need have been affirmed and the steps have been taken to formalize the business to legally start collection services. The group is awaiting its papers to allow the start of activities. Additionally, all six collection carts have been made that will serve as the start-up materials to begin the collection service.
