Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $5,941.86

Project Launch: 12-22-22

Ungwan Baro is a small community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state. The only public primary school in the community is Local Government Education Authority primary school, Ungwan Baro serving a population of 514 pupils (313 girls and 201 boys) and 51 staff members (47 women and 4 men). Almost all of the pupils reside in the community, and only a few teachers come to school each day from neighboring communities. Public primary education is free in Nigeria, hence accessible to the poor. However, the low quality of education that it provides has resulted in most of the children not being able to read even after primary six. In this school, only 38% of pupils can read more than 10 words from a simple text of two- and three-letter words. The project involves setting up a literacy hub in the school. The hub will comprise of three sections; a library with traditional books (Textbooks, recreational books and other materials) and electronic books, an ICT center for teaching ICT skills and playing educational media, and a recreational corner where the pupils can sit while their teacher reads aloud to them. The recreational corner will also be used for psychomotor activities for the nursery pupils.
