With this World Connect grant, members of the Titukuke ndi Ulimi Farmers Group will diversify and expand their scope by venturing into poultry farming. The group will procure and rear Kroiler chickens, a hybrid breed that can survive in the local climate and produce more meat and eggs than the indigenous chickens. The increased meat and egg production can be sold to generate more income for the farmers. The 15 group members will be trained in financial management in order to support them in managing their business well.

Led by a Corps Africa Volunteer (CAV) Margret Chavula, Titukuke ndi Ulimi famers group has with a $2,407 grant from World Connect constructed a chicken kraal and stocked it with 75 Kuroiler chickens. Fifteen members of the club have undergone group dynamics and poultry management education to ensure proper management. The project is expected to directly benefit the fifteen club members and their households through increase in income levels as well as the general community who will buy and use the chickens and eggs from the club. The manure will also help reduce the cost of producing food and increasing household food security.

Tikukuke ndi Ulimi Farmers group in Tchaidoni village Balaka received a $2,407.55 grant from World Connect to invest in poultry farming. The group that consists of 14 members (7 women, 7 men) managed to build a two roomed chicken coop and stocked it with 75 Kuloiler chicks. To ensure smooth running of the business, the members attended a two-day poultry farming and financial management training. The group planned to use the money made from selling eggs to buy chicken feed, unfortunately the group started collecting eggs later than expected. As a result, the group failed to sustain the chickens and decided to share the chickens among themselves to be reared at household level. The group only benefited from the few eggs that were sold and the manure collected from the beddings of the chickens which were used in farms. Currently the group is discussing how best the chicken coop house can be put to use as the chicken business has proved to be a failure largely due to harsh weather conditions that were not anticipated for the new breed.
