The project is implemented by MSLEP (a youth) Cooperative in Burembo community, Buhabwa Village, Kayonza District, where the cooperative manages a beekeeping enterprise on three hectares of forested land formally allocated in 2024. The initiative builds on the collective efforts of former individual beekeepers who pooled their hives as start-up capital, supported by local leadership advocacy so they can increase honey production and ultimately increase their incomes. Its proximity to Akagera National Park and surrounding grazing land provides a favorable ecological environment for high-quality honey production.
With this project, they would like to introduce advanced sensor technologies to address the major risks that affect beekeeping. Using weight sensors, beekeepers will be able to track increases and decreases in honey yield in real time. Motion sensors will help detect intruders—both humans and animals—approaching the hives, thereby reducing theft and destruction. Smell sensors will provide early warning of fire outbreaks by detecting smoke before it spreads to the apiary. Additionally, bio-sensors will identify disease-causing microbes carried by bees during nectar collection, enabling early interventions to protect colony health. it will drastically reduce honey production losses caused by theft, diseases, and fire outbreaks
