The “Don’t Be a Stick in the Mud” Reading and Educational Program in Cabanaconde, Peru continues to provide an opportunity for pre-school age kids to expand their knowledge and learn to read. Instead of playing with sticks in the mud and old tires, the children are benefitting from the nearly 60 educational games and 200 books that were purchased with a grant from World Connect to equip an empty library. Every day, mothers from the community are brought to the library to read to the kids, demonstrating that reading with children is a fun and important activity that should be done at home. Once per year, the community holds a polleria fundraiser, or a chicken bake sale, to generate money to maintain and repair the games and books.
