Parents for a Healthy Tomorrow
Project Launch:
In the village of Joras, near the border of Ecuador, the local Health Post reports that respiratory infections are a major problem for women and children. To improve upon this, a local group, Parents for a Healthy Tomorrow has teamed up with World Connect and their local Peace Corps Volunteer to build improved cookstoves for the homes of fifty of the most impoverished families and train mothers in hygiene, food preparation and gardens, early childhood stimulation and home remedies. The project launched in August 2012 and to date, 29 mothers have completed trainings on diarrhea, respiratory infections, parasites, nutrition, and early childhood stimulation and are receiving home visits. As a result, most families have placed handwashing stations in the home. Locally trained technicians will build the cookstoves and local health promoters will monitor their use/maintenance on an ongoing basis via home visits. Not only will this project help improve the health of women and children in Joras, it will also help motivate the community in their newly formed healthy habits.
