Nursery School in Mphyakula Village
Project Launch: 2-28-19
Parents in Mphyakula Village work long days on remote farms, making it difficult for them to supervise and educate their young children. Consequently, children receive very little formal education before the age of five.
Mphyakula will construct a small nursery school that will serve as a daycare and pre-school education facility. The school will provide a safe and educational environment for kids. After building the nursery school and stocking it with materials like a blackboard, chalk, and books, community members will hire a teacher and pay that teacher with contributions provided by parents of children in attendance.
Final Report: 5-25-20
Using the $2,430 grant from World Connect, Alfred Piyo, a Village X alumni together with Mphyakula Village X committee has brought the community’s nursery school dream alive. The newly constructed nursery school has allowed the community to increase enrollment from 45 to 115 students. In the evenings, the space is used as an adult learning center for over 40 men and women from the community. Older youth also use the school grounds for extracurricular activities. Having young children in school has allowed parents in Mphyakula to attend to their farms and small businesses during the day, providing them time to generate income.
