John Lungu Community Organisation will use $4,967.16 to install a borehole in John Lungu Village, Kasungu District, in the central region of Malawi. The new borehole will provide residents access to safe and clean water as it currently uses untreated water drawn from running streams. It will also help reduce the distance residents walk to get to the nearest water point as well as waiting time if they visit the only borehole available in the nearest village.
The John Lungu Community Water Project in Malawi was successfully implemented between 2022 and 2025 with support from World Connect, with an investment of over $13,400 to address chronic water scarcity. Following unsuccessful drilling attempts due to dry conditions, the project adapted by relocating the borehole and installing a solar-powered tap water system with a 5,000-litre tank, solar panels, a submersible pump, and a water kiosk. The system now serves 37 households (about 162 people), improving access to clean water and reducing waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea by approximately 70% within two months. In addition to improved health, the project has enhanced dignity, reduced the burden on women and girls, and strengthened household stability. Strong community participation and adaptive leadership were key to its success, with the shift from a hand pump to a solar-powered system ensuring a sustainable and long-term solution.
implemented a water project in the area addressing a long standing water shortage in the area. For decades, residents struggled to access clean water due to dry ground conditions and reliance on a 30-year-old borehole that frequently ran dry. Through the project, a 5,000-liter solar-powered clean water system was installed, including a solar-powered submersible pump, water tank, tank stand, and community water kiosk. The new system now provides reliable access to safe water directly within the community, reducing long distances traveled and waiting times to a total of 172 community members. Community testimony highlighted that residents were overjoyed and deeply relieved to finally have dependable clean water access.
