About this Project
The project involves the construction and equipping of a community store and an information booth at the entrance to the B'omb'il Pek Caves Community Reserve in Chisec, Alta Verapaz. This will improve tourism governance and management, thereby enhancing the business for the community, which has positioned its natural resources as a learning and recreational space for visitors to Chisec. The project will invest in the building of an information booth with official visitor reception point, access control, visitor registration, and information about visiting the reserve, and the development of a community store managed by women and youth that offers freshly prepared tayuyos (a type of tamale), local beverages, handicrafts, and packaged goods, with a commitment to environmental awareness. Projected impact includes increased satisfaction among national and international tourists, increased income circulation within the community, consolidation of B’omb’il Pek as a community-based tourism destination with its own distinct identity, and revaluation of Q’eqchi’ culture through gastronomy, crafts, and hospitality.
