Jardin de la Escuela
Project Launch:
The local elementary school in Ortega has started to implement an environmental education curriculum. Children have learned about what can be grown in certain areas in their country or in certain climates, and they've studied the different flora and fauna found throughout Costa Rica.
During the 2012 earthquake, the school grounds were damaged and remain in disrepair. In an effort to clean up the grounds, make the school more presentable, and further the environmental education of the students, this project will lead to the installation of a garden around the perimeter of the school by teachers and students from the 4th to 6th grade.
Project Update:
A garden has been created at the elementary school in Ortega. 700 plants have been planted in tires around the school’s outer perimeter. The tires were painted and decorated by community members and their families. An irrigation system has also been installed at the school to help with watering the plants.
Testimonials
“The women can take credit for the garden and the hard work that went into creating it can be attributed to them. They should take pride in that. The children of the school now have beautiful landscaping as their environment to aid their experience every day in school.” – Daniel, Peace Corps Volunteer
“The project was great! It raised awareness about environmental issues around the town and taught the kids how to take care of nature.” – Karina, Project Participant
