Improving Girls Health and Sanitation at Likwenu CDSS
Project Launch: 4-22-20
This community will construct a girls’ latrine and washroom at Likwenu Community Day Secondary School. This structure will give 130 girls access to clean and private washrooms, so that they can continue to attend school during their menstruation. This will increase attendance and academic performance among female students.
Final Report: 2-18-21
With $710.96, the Likwenu Mother Support Group led the construction and completion of two toilets and a washroom that have enabled 117 female students to gain access to clean toilets and effectively manage their menstruation. With the newly constructed structures, the school now has four toilets for girls which will greatly impact the students, as evidenced by the recent survey which shows that 80 percent of the female students now report to school throughout the month, largely due to the availability of the washroom where they change and clean up during menstruation.
Mphatso Zidana, the Established Field Partner, spoke highly about the idea generation, community involvement and ownership of the project, “Through this project, I have learnt that communities can be their own change agents. Women have the capacity to run projects and transform their own communities. Furthermore, the boys in the school supported the girls in molding bricks. They carried the girls’ agenda and supported the need for a washroom and extra toilets even though they also have similar challenges of toilets. I have learnt to trust the communities and that boys and girls in schools if properly heard have the best interest of each other.”
