Goats for Healthy Living

Year: 2014
Country: Kenya
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $1,400.00

Project Launch:

This project will support the members of the Kapkangani Support Group, which is a support group for adults living with HIV in the Kapkangani town. The members organized around the idea of rearing milking goats to increase their income generation and economic opportunity, as well as improve health. The members will be able to drink the milk, and sell the milk and new baby goats to make a profit and thus produce additional income.

Project Update

The Ministry of Agriculture has provided trainings on goat keeping and maintenance. The Kapkangani Support Group are now registered members of the Dairy Goat Association of Kenya, which has provided additional training and resources. The group has built pens for the goats and will be purchasing the goats soon.

Final Report: 9/19/2016

The goats have been purchased. While fewer goats than proposed were acquired, milk has already been produced. Workshops on the importance of self-care and adequate diet have been facilitated so that HIV+ individuals know what other steps they must undertake alongside anti-retroviral therapy to better improve their health.

"A lot of appreciation for all [the good] that has come to my life, especially the donors who gave this money to buy us goats. I'm very grateful." -- Florence, Project Beneficiary

"Having led the project inception, planning and implementation and its successful completion I sincerely feel that it has changed the lives of the members. Most of them were living in poor health conditions but with knowledge imparted to them on positive living, behavior change, and consumption of nutritious goat milk, they now have a lot hope in living their lives again." -- Lizah, Project Leader
