Project Launch:

The district of Calango, Peru, in the southern province of Cañete, is a small town of about 600 people. Calango has a mild climate, with very little rainfall and sun almost all year. It is a farming community with the principle crops being apples and grapes. The town speaks spanish, and the vast majority of the town are Indigenous Peruvians. The local pre-school serves three to five year-olds. The 10 by 10 foot space, constructed of tin and plywood is cold in the winter, hot in the summer and unstable. Happily, new construction is under way but what the school requested from Kids Connect to supplement the donated beans and rice to feed the children is help with newly constructed kitchen and, most importantly, tools and equipment to plant and maintain an organic kitchen garden. One that the pre-schoolers can learn from and care for; a little garden for pint sized gardeners.
