In a quest to increase productivity and maximize the group’s profits, Fulirwa Beekeeping Enterprise based in Chilumba, Karonga district will use a $9,941.67 World Connect grant to upscale its beekeeping enterprise. The group will renovate its honey processing facility, increase the number of beehives, procure a manual honey processing machine and also invest in quality packaging of the honey. Final Report: 9-30-24

Led by Wedson Kondowe, Fulirwa Beekeeping Enterprise achieved a significant milestone in Karonga through the successful implementation of a comprehensive beekeeping project. The enterprise constructed a modern honey processing facility and equipped it with 40 beehives, 17 smokers, a honey processing machine, and other essential tools. These upgrades boosted honey harvests from 4,700kg in 2024 to 6,042kg in 2025, with sale prices rising from K5,000 to K7,000 per kilogram, resulting in an 80% revenue increase—from K23.5 million ($13,420) to K42.3 million ($24,157). Additionally, all 78 members received training in cooperative management, strengthening their organizational and leadership skills. The project has not only improved income but also fostered sustainable practices, supporting biodiversity and local ecosystems. Atusaye Sichali, 40, shared how her perspective shifted from viewing honey production as a hobby to a viable business: “It has provided me with reliable income and inspired eco-friendly practices that align with consumer demand for sustainability.” This initiative exemplifies how strategic investments in infrastructure and capacity building can drive economic growth, empower community members, and promote environmental conservation.
