Enhancing Honey Production and Quality, and Conserving the Environment

With $8,310.59 support from Mudzi Connect, the Mkuwazi Bee Keeping Association, a second time grant recipient, will expand its beekeeping initiative by procuring 130 hives, protective gear, and honey processing equipment to boost production. The Association’s 175 farmers will receive beehives, beesuits, honey packaging materials and market linkages, while tree planting will enhance environmental conservation. The project will increase household incomes, strengthen food security, and promote environmental conservation.

Situated in Nkhataba District, Mkuwazi Beekeeping Association, has made great progress in  implementing a beekeeping project in the area. The one-year project, which commenced in August 2025, has so far utilized 60% of its total budget of $8,310.59 to procure key project materials. These include 120 out of the planned 130 beehives of which 110 have already been installed along with 10 bee suits, one honey-testing machine, 10 kg of grease, two rolls of hanging wire, and one heavy duty scale. A total of 175 farmers from 10 clubs are expected to benefit from the availability of adequate and appropriate working materials. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve both the quantity and quality of honey harvested, leading to increased income for the association as well as higher individual earnings through dividends.

The Mkuwazi Beekeeping Association in Nkhata Bay has successfully implemented a beekeeping project that boosted honey production and quality, strengthened environmental conservation, and improved livelihoods among its members. With an $8,310.59 co-investment from Mudzi Connect, the project procured and installed 120 beehives and invested in branding and packaging, 1,800 bottles and 1,750 stickers  to sharpen the visibility of the association's Mbeka Honey brand.

The results speak for themselves: honey production climbed from 3,000kg last season to 4,754kg, generating a 58.4% increase in income. Better packaging and a stronger brand also allowed the association to raise its selling price from K4,000 to K6,500 per 250g of honey.

The project's impact extends beyond the hive: members planted 4,000 tree seedlings as part of ongoing environmental conservation efforts, reinforcing the link between sustainable beekeeping and forest health. A member of the Association, Isaac Bayiza, 48, shared: “Since I am making a lot of money, my family’s living standard has changed. I am now able to send my child to school. Additionally, I managed to buy 15 good iron sheets with money I generated from the sales of honey in the just ended season.”
