A grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program in 2011 supported a summer school program for youth in San Pedro de Cajas, Peru, that had an ecological focus. The summer school, led by the Peace Corps Volunteer in this community, four facilitators from the town, and Jose Ramos, a local High School Teacher, provided educational lessons on forestation, solid waste management, and environmental responsibility. The programming offered an enriching summer program for the students, many of whom start drinking alcohol at a very young age. This summer camp helped create tomorrow’s environmental health leaders while providing them with a healthy alternative to drinking. project include public trash clean-ups, establishing micro-landfills in order to bury the recovered trash, the creation of a small green house that houses native tree species, the creation of compost, and a public education campaign focused on the environment.
