COVID-19: Food Security, Employment, and Market Access Among Rural, Indigenous Families
Project Launch: 7-14-20
Marisol Peñaloza, a longtime trusted partner of World Connect, has developed a complex COVID-19 response strategy for three rural communities in and around Cuenca. The plan incorporates measures to ensure food security, employment, and market access among rural, indigenous families in three vulnerable communities. Through this World Connect grant, farmers will receive support with farming inputs, such as seeds, and their products will be subsidized to support the food needs of vulnerable families in the area. COVID-19 testing will be accessible free of charge for 75 people with high exposure who are working to keep markets operational. Social distancing recommendations, adjusted market hours, and waste management protocols will be publicized on signposts with these funds. Lastly, face masks, hand sanitizer, and cleaning supplies will be provided to 100 rural traders and logistical support staff across these three communities.
