Children in the community of Bijagua, Costa Rica don't have access to many recreational opportunities. With a $500 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program in 2010, seventy kids from ages 11 to 24 years old attended Camp Green in Bijagua de Upala, Costa Rica, where they learned the importance of teamwork, the value of respect, how to be stewards of the environment, how to appreciate their own culture and that of others, and the significance of exploring new ways of learning. Some kids had the opportunity to work as youth leaders, planning project for the camp and learning leadership and organizational skills. Through the camp, these leaders gained more self-confidence and became the messengers, transferring lessons learned to kids and adults at home or in other communities. Camp Green succeeded in connecting local kids with each other and with mentors in a fun, exciting, and educational way, facilitating connections with others and promoting global citizenship.
