Project Launch:

Cerro Cacahuatique is a beautiful mountain located in central Morazán, El Salvador. Its ridges are inhabited by several small communities that enjoy the striking scenery every day but many who live in this beautiful setting do not have the opportunity to appreciate its beauty. With a $496 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program, an environmental camp for youth from three different communities on the mountain was held to give youth in the region a basic understanding of their environment and to instill a deeper appreciation for the environment, inspire daily habits and practices that affect the environment positively, and encourage creative ways to reduce and reuse products. According to the Peace Corps Volunteer who ran the camp, not only did these kids receive invaluable lessons about the environment and how to protect it, but they had a fun and unique weekend away from home. For most participants it was unlike any other experience in their lives. The kids who participated are now much more conscientiousness about their delicate ecosystem, and litter less and recycle more. The camp will have lasting benefits for the surrounding communities as kids not only changed their own practices, but encouraged others to change as well.
