Tambacounda Chicken Coop Project

Year: 2016
Country: Senegal
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Economic Opportunity
Project Investment: $4,021.72

Project Launch: 7-1-16

Working with a local female farmer, this project will train members of Leyyi Dendi Women’s Group to sustainably raise chickens. The women will participate in workshops focused on poultry husbandry, vaccinations, and business management and will learn how to build, maintain and repair durable chicken coops. Through raising chickens, the women will have an opportunity to diversify and increase their families’ income, leading to more financial independence.

Progress Update: 12/5/2016

The coop has been completed and the women's group is nearly ready to sell their first brood of chicks. Once they sell their second brood, they will use the profits from their sales to begin the process again by purchasing the supplies and materials necessary to raise another round of chicks for the coming spring.

Final Report: 2/21/2017

10 chicken coops have been constructed and the women's group has managed to cut down on the chicken-rearing time from 45 days to 30 days, enabling them to receive revenue sooner than expected.

Testimonials

"This project has given this women's group a source of pride and accomplishment. Now that they are profitable and successful in their business endeavor, they are respected in their community in a way they have never been before." - Laura, Peace Corps Volunteer

"We are going to keep this project going because we want to work and to have money to help ourselves and our families. We are motivated and will not fail. We are too thankful for the help of the Peace Corps and World Connect to stop now." - Diavel, Project Leader
