Supervision of Safe Motherhood Action Groups
Project Launch: 2-9-16
In 2012, the Saving Mothers, Giving Life initiative, a major public-private partnership spearheaded by the U.S. Government, was launched in Zambia, Uganda and Nigeria to improve maternal and infant health. Safe Motherhood Action Groups (SMAGs) – groups of volunteer health workers who serve as a critical link between their neighbors and their communities’ health facilities – were created to carry out much of the work on the ground, at the community level. Currently, only 6 out of the 52 health facilities in Chipata District have properly trained SMAGs, due to budget constraints. This project will train and increase the capacity of three additional SMAGs, to supplement the District’s plan to train 12 additional SMAGs in 2016.
Project Update: 4-10-16
A total of 58 SMAG volunteers from the three targeted health facilities received a 1-day training from the Chipata District Health Office staff, which focused on reporting and intervention methods. Following the training, SMAG volunteers organized impromptu meetings to create actions plans for future outreach activities.
Final Report: 8-7-17
A total of 58 SMAG members received expanded technical support and training in delivery care and post-partum hemorrhage response. This includes 21 SMAG members from Katandala, 20 from Kasenga, and 17 from Chizenje.
