The Smart Art Project supported a fun art and creativity class for the middle school students of Caserio El Limon in El Salvador. At the end of the school year the students applied what they learned in class and painted a world map mural in the school and light posts with the older youth from the youth group in the community. Classes included a self-portrait competition, t-shirts tie-dying, mobiles and mosaics making, self-defense, color theory, making art with recycled materials, making jewelry from old magazine paper, and origami from old newspapers. The goal of these classes was to introduce creative, individual thinking, and to use art to discuss life skills such as self esteem, gender roles, self expression and youth empowerment in a fun, creative and open environment. Putting youth in leadership positions and giving them responsibilities to manage and carry out a project has had a variety of positive impacts. It taught participating youth how to manage resources, plan ahead, and be empowered to realize that when kids come together and work together, they can accomplish a lot more than they thought they could. This project promoted leadership, individual initiative, organizing within a group, and working as a team.
