Salemata Students Fight to Stay in School

Year: 2012

Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $5,000.00

Project Launch:

Salemata is a large village located in the Kedougou region in southeastern Senegal, with a population of more than 10,000. The nearest high school is 90 kilometers away and most students drop out of school because of the distance. Young boys pick up work in the agriculture fields or in nearby mines, while young girls are often sold into marriages. A Salemata community-based organization, the Parent's Association, wishes to change that and with the approval of the Senegalese Ministry of Education, they have embarked upon the construction of a brand new high school in Salemata. World Connect is supporting the complete construction of one of the six proposed classrooms. Despite many differences in ethnicity and language, this project is the shared dream of the Salemata community and its surrounding villages.
