Latrines for Dassilame Ba, Boutilimite, and Saroudia

Year: 2017
Country: Senegal
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Health
Project Investment: $8,038.00

Project Launch: 4-25-17

Dassilame Soce, Boutilimite, and Saroudia are three Mandinka sister villages along the Route Nationale in the Fatick region. These communities grow rice, peanut, onions, and cashews as their main crops. Results from a baseline survey showed that approximately half of the households do not have latrines; the other half has cheaply made latrines that collapse during the rainy season. As a result, open defecation is rampant. Recent tests show a high rate of e-coli contamination in two of the four village wells tested. Diarrhea is a common illness among all villagers, but especially in children under the age of 5. Such illnesses can be drastically reduced through improved infrastructure and education. The proposed project has two main goals: To build 23 private latrines and 2 public school latrines; to promote best hygiene and sanitation practices among latrine recipients through mandatory causeries and home visits on hygiene-related themes. The overall objective of the project is to increase access to clean water and improved sanitation, and to encourage villagers to adopt good sanitation behaviors and practices.

Project Update: 2-7-18

At this point, 22 latrines have been finished. 3 latrines are still under construction with a project end date tentatively predicted within the month. Community members in three villages have received training in proper latrine maintenance and sanitation and have also learned about proper handwashing techniques.

Final Report: 7-19-18

25 latrines have been constructed and 362 individuals have access to improved sanitation. 70 heads of household participated in WASH training to better promote hygienic practices.
