Kids' Club
Year: 2011
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Education
Project Investment: $500.00
Project Launch:
This project will implement an art club for approximately 30 disadvantaged youth (ages 3 to 12) in the San Victor community. Local artisans will teach the students about painting, ceramic doll making, poetry, and other various art projects. The club will also include literature lessons to help decrease the rate of illiteracy among the youth.Project Update
The project was originally designed for a six-month class, but it has been active for almost a year and will continue for at least six more months. All of the children are showing improvement in behavior, such as an increase in self-esteem and creative thinking, and a decrease in anxiety. Two local artisans helped with several of the projects and have provided a great role model for the kids.
Testimonials
"I now know all kinds of arts and crafts. Before the class I couldn't even write my own name. Now I can write my name without looking at the letters and I am starting to learn the alphabet." - Yessica, 10 years old, Project Participant
"My children used to run around and wouldn't listen. Now they wait patiently for the classes to begin. They are more respectful and are showing improvements in school." - Yecenia, Project Participant
