The goal of Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) is to improve self-esteem, increase leadership skills, and honor the power of unity and diversity. In 2010, World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program awarded $500 to implement Camp GLOW in El Salvador where social pressures based on gender inequity, lack of leadership training and opportunity, high early pregnancy rates and lack of job application skills prevent young women from pursuing their dreams. During the camp the girls participated in interactive activities where they learned how to address obstacles they face as young women growing up in rural El Salvador and they learned about the importance of mental and physical well-being and how to preserve and protect their mental and physical health. In El Salvador women are traditionally reserved and can be seen by some as inferior to the men in social settings, but Camp GLOW taught a group of women ages 11-18 to use their voice and be the biggest person they were capable of being. The girls who participated in Camp GLOW went through a major transformation -- not only did the girls who attended Camp GLOW benefit, but they returned home and started young women’s groups in their community to spread the ideas of high self-esteem, confidence, and unity. These newly confident women are sure to do great things thanks to Camp GLOW!
