With a $500 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program, an art camp called El Parte de Arte en Nuestro Mundo or “Art’s Part in Our World” was run as a Saturday activity for kids in Las Lajas, Altamira, and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Students were given their own set of art materials to bring to class everyday and were allowed to keep the materials after the completion of the program so that they could practice what they learned. Two involved youth from the community who are both studying art in university helped plan, execute, and supervise the camp. Each day the kids learned about, discussed, and viewed the art of a different artist from all over the world and then completed a project imitating that artist's ideas or style. There were art lessons, open discussions, and art project that they worked on let them bond with new people and create new friendships that they have kept even after the class ended. The classes touched on the differences among the artists and how they were influenced by their country of origin and culture. The program offered kids a place to express their creativity and individuality and make something they could bring home and be proud of and the program provided the kids with a way to put their weekend time to positive use. Not only did the children who participated benefit but during their classes, they painted a mural for the whole community to enjoy. The community has really appreciated the art the class has produced and is now more open to the emphasis of art in the lives of youth.
