Zambia, endowed with profitable copper deposits, has weathered many challenges, including HIV/AIDS which has infected over an eighth of the population, widespread poverty which affects some 60% of Zambians, and high rates of unemployment. Inflation, rising food prices, and decreasing prices of its copper export have created political tension. Nearly half of all Zambian children are stunted with rates at alarming levels in the country’s rural population. Life expectancy is a mere 57 years, one of the lowest figures in the region. The country’s robust economic growth, based on its abundance of copper, is greatly undermined by the costs associated with the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the population’s continued rate of growth.
