Greenhouse in the Dominican Republic

Year: 2015
Country: Dominican Republic
Project Status: Funded
Impact Sector: Economic Opportunity
Project Investment: $3,638.44

Project Launch:

La Guazara is a small agricultural town located in the south of the Dominican Republic. This project will lead to the construction of a community greenhouse, where farmers can grow food in a controlled environment, yielding five to six times more produce and as much as a 35% increase in each farmer’s income. The local farmers association, which consists of 30 male and female farmers, will receive trainings on business management and greenhouse construction and management. After the first harvest, the farmers will reinvest their profits to buy more seeds, helping to keep the greenhouse sustainable.

Project Update

The greenhouse has been built and is fully functional, with the first harvest scheduled for June 2016. The farming association is currently participating in a greenhouse management course where they will learn how to properly maintain and clean the greenhouse as well as explore strategies and techniques to grow food. The farmers also received trainings on accounting practices and business operations, which will be essential as the association continues to grow and expand to include more women farmers.
