Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World)
Project Launch: 2-18-16
This project will build to the 2016 Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World), an annual weeklong leadership camp that gives young girls the opportunity to develop life skills and set goals to make a difference in their communities. The camp will provide a safe, supportive, and creative environment for 80 girls from around the country to engage in educational, recreational and health activities, addressing topics such as gender equality, exercise, self-esteem, leadership, and environmental stewardship.
Project Update: 6/20/16
Camp GLOW planning has been going well and they are on track for their June 25th start date. All involved clubs are fundraising in their villages through bake sales and barbeques to cover the costs of transportation. For those that do not reach the amount they need to cover costs, the organization has received donations and discounts from local businesses to help out.The girls are dedicated and have been waking up early and staying up late to prepare food, count money, and make plans for their next fundraising event. The participating girls have put in incredible effort to raise funds and contribute their part to making Camp GLOW a reality.
Project Update: 8/1/16
Camp GLOW was a success, bringing together past participants with new ones, facilitating the mentoring and coaching of girls as they mature into responsible adolescents. The project has enabled girls to better understand they have the potential to steer their lives and communities consciously and purposefully.
Testimonials
"I am looking forward to the camp, especially for the girls. I graduated from high school and have high hopes for my life and I hope the camp will help the girls find similar success." - Beverly, Former camper who is now working as a counselor
"I think the girls came away with friendships, something they will talk about -- camp with smiles and laughs. They don't fight now, they made friends with each other and with girls from other villages. They are excited to go to camp again and continue GLOW club as well. I would like to help again with camp with the next volunteer in the village." - Estela, Project leader
"I like the speakers because they taught us about peer pressure and to not do things we don't want to do. I like to teach the girls back at the village that not only boys can win, girls can win too. Girls need to be strong!" - Shelaiah, Camper
